Atlantic Chamber of Commerce Applauds Tax Reduction, Urges Fiscal Responsibility
Windsor, NS (October 23, 2024) – The Atlantic Chamber of Commerce applauds the Government of Nova Scotia's announcement to reduce the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) by one percentage point, effective April 1, 2025. This decision marks a significant step towards alleviating financial pressures on businesses within the region.
“Lowering the cost of doing business has been a priority for the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce and our members,” said Rhonda Tulk-Lane, CEO of the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce. “This reduction in the HST is a clear indication that the Government of Nova Scotia is committed to fostering an environment conducive to economic growth and is actively listening to the business community's needs.”
While the Atlantic Chamber is supportive of reducing the cost of doing business through lowering the sales tax, it is also incumbent upon Government to ensure that it practices fiscal prudence and does not contribute to the province’s debt through deficit spending. The Atlantic Chamber believes that this balanced approach will help sustain economic stability and growth in Nova Scotia. Over the years, the province has been a leader in reducing regulatory burden for businesses; by continuing to reduce the tax burden, the Government will continue to make Nova Scotia an attractive and competitive place for investors and entrepreneurs.
