SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The Greater Summerside Chamber of Commerce is celebrating the discovery of historical business records that date back to the 1900s.
The records date back to Jan. 24, 1900, detailing the organizing of the chamber, which was known at the time as the Summerside Board of Trade.

The documents, which are written in clear handwriting, detail the activities of local businesspeople in Summerside throughout the years and contain notable Summerside names like Robert Holman, J.E. Lefurgy and Neil McQuarrie.
Additionally, the book holds records of partnerships with local government, fur exports and other markets and thoughts of business people during that time.

The chamber, the McNaught History Centre and the City of Summerside archives are co-ordinating to ensure the information from the documents is preserved.
Chamber president Blake Doyle said the records are an invaluable window through time, allowing insight into some of the decisions that shaped Summerside.
“As you read through, it becomes apparent that these decisions were not always cut and dried, but often debated and contested and victories hard-won,” said Doyle.
“We are reminded of the great courage, creativity and cooperation required for entrepreneurs to succeed, regardless of the time period they are working in.”
To celebrate, the chamber is hosting a throwback DJ dance party with the theme of the 1980s and 1990s.
The dance will take place at the Sunset Room on Thursday, Sept. 29, from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m.
