  • We All Have a Hand in Creating Welcoming Communities

Interesting and timely article from HBR. (https://hbr.org/2019/12/what-makes-you-multicultural)

As we look to fuel population growth in Atlantic Canada through immigration, many of us are speaking about creating welcoming communities, which I believe is a critical success factor.
But to do that, I think this article may have hit upon a precursory condition, which is to first ask ourselves if we, as individuals, are multicultural or have a multicultural mindset, and then move on to ask that about groups and communities.
If not, as the authors aptly point out “our cultural beliefs frame the categories we see in the world.”
This can either limit or unlock innovative solutions to creating welcoming multicultural communities in Atlantic Canada.

The Atlantic Chamber of Commerce takes proactive steps to promote reconciliation and respect for Indigenous rights within the corporate sector. In response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Call to Action 92, the Chamber urges its members to embrace the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as a guiding framework.

Recognizing the importance of education, the Chamber encourages businesses to provide comprehensive training for management and staff on the history of Indigenous peoples, including the legacy of residential schools, Indigenous rights, and Aboriginal-Crown relations. Emphasizing intercultural competency, conflict resolution, and anti-racism, these efforts aim to foster a more inclusive and harmonious corporate environment rooted in mutual understanding and respect.
