The 'What If' Conversation
Although it can be uncomfortable to consider, the "what if" conversation is critical, no matter the organization's size or shape. This is good insight from McKinsey & Company.
What if your leader is no longer there?
In the Navy, we had a 2IC’s (2nd in-command) ready to step up and lead. In the military you plan, practice, learn, and adapt until perfected. I believe this informed my approach to planning for the unexpected or crisis during my career.
While in the private sector, it was a sad experience (it too informed my approach), but I still remember when we learned the incoming leader of Michelin passed away unexpectedly. The company was prepared though and globally we navigated though a difficult time.
So, do you have a 2IC? Do they want the job? Are they prepared to carry out the duties? Will the team follow their lead? Does the team understand the plan, and can they perform their roles and responsibilities?
Necessary questions in need of answers. Creating a high-performance team at your organization necessitates preparing for the unexpected—just like professional sports teams do in case of player injury.
Be sure to have the conversation, make a plan, communicate the plan, and practice the plan.
Be ready and be well.
